Day Five: Rain on our parade

Even though is rained lots the word of the day was definitely "Clean!" The aim was to get all the features and layers uncovered so we can plan them tomorrow and hopefully excavate some more great finds!

Pete pontificates to Emma and Jordan about the value of a good mattock!

Andy has his dogs keep a keen eye on the excavation

Lots of drawing is taking place on site with the trench fully planned after the removal of topsoil and elevation survey in the Priory west range.

And everyone wondered why it didn't take Alex ten minutes... (Expand to see the full glory)

The artefact below shows the value of community engagement; handed in by a local this moulding could provide evidence of the re-use of Medieval material in the Tudor period.

Small but beautifully carved

As well as trench one, the team focused their attentions on trench two, Wilhelm and posh Rob removed the topsoil in readiness for the beginning of excavations on Saturday. In addition to the finds handed in by the locals we gathered a few of our own today. Below is shown a piece of lead window came, used to hold together the glass panes in a 16th century window.

Sandy attempts to hide her excitement...

In summary - despite the rain the team did a brilliant job and thanks for Elmet Archaeology for the gazebo!
